Technical Colleges: Applied Learning Towards a Career

The Cost of College Continues to Rise

A traditional four year university is not necessarily the right choice for all high school graduates. The cost of a major university, private or state, has soared in recent decades and is out of the reach of many potential college aspirants. If a student opts for financial aid, they could end up graduating with crippling debt that they will be repaying for years to come.

Bucking the Status Quo

Some students already have their career path in mind upon leaving high school, and a four year degree is not always a necessary step. For these students, technical colleges are a perfect blend of academia and practical learning to launch them into their chosen field.

Technical vs Traditional

Technical colleges differ from traditional four year universities in many ways. For starters, there are no dorms, pep rallies, or parties on campus to distract from learning. A student at a technical school can still live a comfortable life at home without having to worry about the hassles of dorm life.

– Cost Less Money than Traditional College

The money that would have been spent on overpriced room and meal charges at a traditional college can instead be applied to the schooling itself. Additionally, most students find that focusing strictly on the learning at hand enables them to get the most out of their education.

– A Focused Curriculum Early On

One of the most beneficial aspects of a degree or certificate obtained at technical colleges is that the chosen curriculum is extremely focused and relevant. A student enrolled in electronics, automotive, or construction programs will find that the focus is exclusively on the subject matter, with very few requirements outside of the core curriculum.

– Have an Extremely Hands On Approach

These classes are very hands-on, with students participating in the tasks being taught rather than only reading or observing them. Students from technical colleges graduate with an applied knowledge of their chosen field of study, making them valuable commodities in the job market.

– A More Flexible Class Schedule

An added advantage of technical colleges is that the low cost and flexible class schedules enable many students to work while they are attending school. Often students will seek out entry level jobs in their field of study to not only begin their career path but also earn money for school as they go.

The Bottom Line

Once the degree or certificate is obtained, these students are in prime position with their companies to move up the ladder of success. While in school they can also make contacts within their industry, and then usually receive job placement assistance from their technical college when graduation is imminent.
