College Bound

These last couple of months have been very strenuous for me.  First of all my son graduated from high school in June. That, by itself, was stressful enough.  I wasn’t convinced or certain that he was going to actually graduate on time. It seemed like he put his community service off until the last minute.

In San Diego, its a requirement for students to complete 30 hours of community service as a prerequisite for high school graduation.  He did not seem to be too motivated about complying with this requirement.  There was no sense of urgency in him about anything. He would not show me a progress report, or report card for that matter.

He was considering “taking a year off”, before looking into college. He said, he had no idea what he wanted to major in. I replied, “Just enroll in college and take basic education classes until you decide what you want to major in”.

He would just look at me and not say anything, but I could see the frustration in his eyes and the disgust in his body language. Well, he ended up graduating on time. It was a very proud moment, and one of great relief, for me.

What was even more pleasing was that he actually enrolled in college. He follow the lead of one of his friends and enrolled in college to study graphic design and animation. Whatever, it doesn’t matter to me, because its a three year, bachelor degree program.

He even commented to me that a bachelors degree now a days is not much better than a high school diploma, wow! He’s actually thinking beyond a bachelors degree.

Okay, now that school is no longer and issue, I just have to worry about financing his studies. I don’t care how much it will cost, I’m going to help him out as much as possible. I promised him that whatever he did to better himself, I would back him up, financially, emotionally, and every other way possible.

It seems like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders. My biggest worry has always been the ability of my children to be self sufficient. I want them to be able to take care of themselves and their family. As a father, that is my prayer for them.

It seemed like at the blink of an eye, my son went from someone who could care less about his future, to someone who is completely motivated and eager to get his college life started, and he will, next Monday.

Now, because I keep abreast of the crime statistics and tendencies in the area where I live, I want my son, who now has a bright future ahead of him, to be protected at all times. For that reason I ordered a cell phone stun gun for him. He can carry it with him at all times without attracting any attention, because it looks just like a cell phone. He can carry it strapped to his wrist without any worries.

I know that no product or gizmo will guarantee my son’s protection and safety but at least it gives me a little less stress and worry.

Be safe and have a great life.
